Atolla USB 3.0 Hub Review

In this day and age everything that plugs into a PC requires a USB port and with most PC only having a few ports, they often become used up very quickly. The best solution to this is to buy a hub. A USB hub takes one USB port from your PC and essentially converts it to several USB ports for data transfer and charging devices. This hub has four USB ports that do data transfer and charging as well as a fifth port that is dedicated to charging devices.

This hub is a relatively small unit with four ports on the top, each with their own dedicated power button and a fifth port dedicated to charging devices on the front of the unit. The back end is where the cable that connects to the PC meets with the main body itself. I have one issue with this cable, which is its length, for something that is likely to be sat on a desk at a higher position than a PC a cable length of 630mm just isn’t enough in my opinion, I myself only just managed to get the cable to reach my PC with barely any slack for movement.

This is the first time I have ever come across a USB hub with a power switch for each port, this is actually something I like as I have PC accessories with built-in LED lights that are programmed to stay on through the power being outputted by the USB ports on my PC, even when the PC is off. These power buttons allow me to isolate the power and stop it running  to the accessory in that port. The only downside is that anytime I switch my PC on I need to remember to turn the port on for the accessory needed. It’s easy to see if a port is on or not as each port has its own built-in blue LED light that lights up while the port is on and is turned off when the port is off.

In use:

I have been using this hub for both accessories and data transfer as well as charging my mobile phone. In terms of charging the dedicated port on the front is as fast as charging from a standard plug socket. It’s known as an ‘Intelligent’ port, which means it knows as soon as you plug your mobile phone in what amperage to charge your device at, it can choose automatically between 1A or 2A depending on the device.  The ports on top are also fast at charging but nowhere near as quick as the dedicated port.

In terms of transferring data, it remains as fast as plugging my pen drive directly into my port. I don’t use it for much data transfer though and mainly use it as a hub for accessories. I find it works great for both though.

Overall:

A fantastic hub that offers an easy way to expand on your current USB port setup, without any tricky installation. It works great as an all round hub.
