DBPower 12MP Action Camera Review

Introduction:

Welcome to my DBPower 12MP Action Camera review. Ever since the Go Pro camera has grown in popularity, the market has become flooded with cheaper alternatives such as this one by DBPower. Is this alternative any good though ?

AKASO EK7000 Pro 4K Action Camera + PNY Elite-X 64GB U3 microSDHC Card (Bundle)
  • UPGRADE SERIES OF AKASO EK7000: AKASO EK7000 Pro action camera delivers 4K/25fps, 2.7K/30fps, 1080P/60fps videos and 16 MP photos that capture every moment in crisp detail and unparalleled clarity.
  • INTUITIVE UI DESIGN: Ultra 2 inch IPS touch screen shows everything crystal clearly and brightly, easy to change settings, switch shooting modes, preview and playback footage.
  • ELECTRONIC IMAGE STABILIZATION: Built-in Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) delivers steady and smooth videos. AKASO EK7000 Pro sports camera ensures excellent experience in shooting fast-moving objects.
  • WATERPROOF CAMERA UP TO 131FT: Equipped with the upgraded waterproof case, this underwater camera can deep dive up to 131 feet, ready to capture all details of your adventures. Ideal for water sports such as swimming, surfing, diving, snorkeling, etc.
  • ADJUSTABLE VIEW ANGLE: You can set the view angle of this action camera depending on your needs between super wide, wide, medium and narrow. It's easier to hit someone with low angle. With high angle you can see more.

Design:

Similar in appearance to many other sports cameras this sports a rectangular frame with a rubber coated plastic exterior and while the camera isn’t slim it certainly does have a sleek appearance. Located on the exterior of the camera are various buttons, some ports and a 1.50-inch full-color HD display. The three ports which are located on the left-hand side of the camera each have their own function. One is A MicroUSB port for charging the camera as well as transferring data between a PC and the inserted memory card, another is for connecting the camera to your T.V to view it on the large screen and the last one is the MicroSD port.

At the bottom of the camera is a removable battery cover. This is a bit fiddly just like the covers on other action cameras I have used. With this camera you get two batteries included, one is already installed upon receiving the camera and the other is packed with the included accessories. Each battery is capable of up to 88 minutes of recording time.

On it’s on the camera isn’t waterproof. Just like Go Pro and other alternatives, this makes use of a removable shell that encloses the camera and protects it from water and dust. The shell is see through and has all the appropriate buttons in place, however, there’s no access to the ports or battery area when the cover is on. The cover opens up from behind to allow you to place and remove the camera when you need to. There’s a thick white seal around this door that keeps liquid and dust out.

There are also several accessories included that all feel well made, I won’t go too much into these as that would take up a lot of words, however, I have posted the full contents listing from the Amazon listing below for you to check out.

  • 1x DBPOWER Action Camera
  • 1x Waterproof Case
  • 1x Waterproof Case Clip
  • 1x Multi-Function Clip
  • 1x Bicycle Mount
  • 1x Camera Clip
  • 1 x Helmet Mount
  • 3x Belts
  • 1x Wiper
  • 2x 3M Stickers
  • 1x USB Cable
  • 1x User Manual
  • 2x Batteries

You will also be pleased to know that most Go Pro/Action camera accessory packs will work with this camera. I have several of these packs and everything is compatible. So as well as the included accessories listed above you can also get things like chest straps, water floats, exterior car mounts and so much more.

In use:

The first thing to note when it comes to using this action camera and many others is that you will require a memory card. This one can support memory cards up to 32GB in size. I do think we need to start seeing action cameras moving away from this only officially allowing 32GB memory cards as video content does take up quite a bit of space. That said, though, the camera does support loop recording. Loop recording is where the camera will carry on recording when the memory card is about of space and it does this by deleting the oldest files in order. If you do choose to use this mode you should regularly backup your content to a PC.

While the camera does have a 1.50-inch screen to view a live recording, stored recording and photos, it’s not always going to be possible to see it. For example, you won’t see the screen while the camera is on a bike helmet. This isn’t a real issue but if you do like to see the recording as it happens you’ll be happy to know this camera has WiFi. No that doesn’t mean it can connect to the internet, it does, however, mean it can connect to your mobile phone while the phone treats it as a WiFi router. This means through the use of an app, available here for Android users and here for Apple users. I haven’t spent too much time with the application, but I have used it enough to like and certainly recommend it.

Navigating through the user interface of the camera isn’t that hard. You simply tap on the power button to switch between modes and access the settings area. In the settings area you use the up and down buttons on the side of the camera to select different options and then once you have found an option you want to select simply press the ok button on top of the camera. There are many settings to choose from such as resolution settings and time settings.

The video quality of this camera is surprisingly good, It’s by no means professional looking, but at the low price of this camera, that’s really not expected. The video is overall smooth and easy to look at. It’s not the best image in the world but it’s also not the worst. There’s no shaking (unless of course, you’re shaking the camera yourself) and the audio pickup is fantastic.

The photos produced are not too bad but are on the same level as what most smartphone cameras can create. There are a few resolutions to pick from in the settings menu should you want to switch to a smaller MP resolution.

The videos and photos you produce can be watched on the camera, through a PC or even from a connected T.V. This gives you a good few ways to watch and view whatever you have created.

Overall:

Coming in at below £50, this really is a good little Action camera. It may not have the best specifications but it cost a lot less than a GO Pro and basically does the same things. It’s well made and very easy to use.
