Introduction:
Welcome to my Monstercube Flyer Portable Bluetooth Speaker review. The Monstercube Flyer is a speaker that has been built with an urban outdoor design to it, making it perfect for meets in the skatepark or having clipped to your bag as you go out on your BMX.
Design and build quality:
As I mentioned above this speaker has an Urban design to it, that makes it look good in Urban scenarios. In my opinion, this gives it a very dull appearance with not much to look at. Instead what there is, is simply a black slab with a speaker grill on each side of it. There are five buttons on the top edge of the speaker while running down the right-hand edge is a rubber flap that lifts to reveal a power switch, a MicroSD slot, an AUX in port and lastly a MicroUSB port for charging the built-in battery. Talking of the battery, the one in the Monstercube Flyer has enough juice to give you up to 12 hours of playback per charge. I tested this and found this statement to be true. The speaker gives me about 9 to 10 hours on high volumes and 11 to 12 hours on lower volumes.
There’s a leather strap on the top of the speaker that is useful for carrying it in one hand or clipping it onto a bag. The strap feels quite sturdy and doesn’t feel like it will break too easily, which is great as it’s going to be having the speaker dangling from it a lot.
With an IPX4 rating, this speaker is waterproof, but this doesn’t mean you can throw it into your pool, as an IPX4 rating means it’s protected from splashes of water from any direction for up to 5 minutes at a time. I gave this a little test with a spray bottle and can happily say the speaker is still working quite well.
Build quality isn’t an issue at all. The Monstercube flyer is very well made and this is easy to see before you even pick it up to feel it. It doesn’t weigh a lot but still feels very solid and having dropped it a few times by mistake I know just how solid it is.
Setup and signal reliability:
The initial pairing of this with my mobile phone was very quick and very easy, which is usual for most Bluetooth devices. I had the pairing process done within 30 seconds and was good to go. If you haven’t done this before, you will be pleased to know that the included manual shows you how to do it with ease.
I am able to use this speaker with no signal issues at all in my kitchen while my phone is sat at my desk in my front room. This shows me that the speaker is quite reliable at maintaining a strong and stable connection to the device it is connected to.
If you don’t have a Bluetooth device or simply wish not use the Bluetooth mode then you’ll be pleased to know the Monstercube Flyer speaker has an AUX in port for connecting a device via a 3.5mm male to male audio cable as well as MicroSD slot for listening to music stored on a MicroSD card.
Audio and microphone quality:
I feel a tiny bit let down by the audio produced by the Monstercube Flyer speaker. While it’s clear and the lyrics and beats are put across with clarity, but the overall sound is very much tinny and this is a slight issue. It’s a shame because the speaker delivers a great level of bass, but I simply don’t enjoy listening to music on it at all.
The built in microphone works quite well and I am able to use it for Skype and normal phone calls without any issues at all. It picks up my voice and delivers it very clearly to the person I am on the phone to at the time.
Overall:
The Monstercube Flyer is ok but certainly isn’t as good as some of the others I have used before. The design is rather bland, but the build quality is fantastic. The audio is ok, but it has a major issue with sounding tinny. The microphone works really well and is brilliant at picking up my voice.
