Edifier S1000DB Review

The Edifier S1000DB is a wireless bookshelf speaker set, produced by Edifier, an audio solutions company, with plenty of different audio products under their belt, from earphones to amazing home theatre setups like the Luna E255. Their S1000DB speaker set is one of their top end setups that consists of two speakers in a bookshelf speaker form and features connectivity options such as Bluetooth 4.0 and Optical amongst other more common connection types.

One thing that has always impressed me about Edifier speakers, is the design and that remains the same with the Edifier S1000DB bookshelf speaker set. The speakers feature gorgeous wooden panels all around, with the side panels colored a light brown and the center panel finished in a smooth matt black. A removable mesh fabric cover sits on the front of each speaker and I have to say with or without these covers the speakers look fantastic, keep them on for a slightly more minimalistic look, or remove them to see the very well made, very premium looking driver setup, which consists of Titanium dome tweeters paired with rear bass reflex ports.

Edifier S1000DB Review

Like some previous Edifier speakers, the Edifier S1000DB bookshelf speaker set features a slanted design, which puts the drivers at an angle for better exposure as well as giving the overall design a bit more style. With dimensions of 8 x 13.5 x 10.5 inches (W x H x D), these speakers are quite big, especially when compared with the Edifier R1280DB bookshelf speakers I use with my PC, which stand at only 9.5 inches tall from the ground up. Since the S1000DB is a large set, I have to admit, putting them on my PC desk was out of the question, so instead, they have been placed on my sideboard, where, they manage to maintain their gorgeous styling without a problem.

As you’d expect, one speaker is designated as the Active speaker, while the other is designated as the passive speaker. This means there are some differences between the two in terms of looks, for example, the Active speaker features a little LED light below the driver setup, which is used to keep you informed of the current connectivity status. The main difference though is found around the rear of the active speaker, in the form of the control/connection panel. Here you will find dials for the volume, treble and bass, plus an Optical port, AUX ports, COX port, left speaker port, a power switch and lastly the plug. The volume dial also pushes in to act as an input selection button. The rear of the passive speaker is home to the right speaker connection port and nothing else. Connecting the two speakers to each other is done using Edifier’s own cable, which at 5 meters long, is enough for most bookshelf speaker setups.

With thanks to an included remote control, it’s possible to control the Edifier S1000DB bookshelf speaker set without getting up off your ass. Edifier’s remotes have always been a bit hit and miss to me, sometimes they’re good and then sometimes they’re awful due to weird shape and large bulky sizes. Thankfully the Edifier S1000DB bookshelf speaker set comes bundled with a pretty decent remote. It’s small, is the right shape for comfortable use and isn’t complicated to use thanks to 9 button layout. It can be used to adjust the volume, switch between standby and on and select between the different connection options. Powering it is a CR2025 round style battery, of which one comes already installed, making the remote ready to use right away.

Now, let’s talk about that other thing, that any decent speaker should have, that is, of course, an amazing audio quality. I have been left impressed by Edifier many times when it comes to audio quality and the same is to be said about the Edifier S1000DB bookshelf speaker set. I have been using the set mainly with Bluetooth connected to both my phone and my LG smart T.V, however, I have tested all connection mediums and the quality remained the same across all of them. Connected to my phone the main purpose is, of course, listening to music, while being connected to my T.V is for watching movies and playing games. In all the examples mentioned above, the audio is fantastic. The sound is rich and clear and even at the highest of volumes, there’s no distortion, which is always a bonus for someone like me who enjoys loud music. Bass and treble are great and thanks to the fact you can adjust both of these to your liking, you have full control over how you hear the audio.

I’m particularly impressed with how well the speakers handle gaming. I have been using them while playing the recently released Red Dead Redemption 2. The balance between music, sound effects and dialogue is amazing. It really does feel like I’m immersed in the wild west gaming world from an audio standpoint when using the Edifier S1000DB bookshelf speaker set while playing this game.
