The Edifier R1010BT bookshelf speakers are a set of twin Bluetooth enabled speaker that feature a built-in amplifier and a few different connectivity options. Coming in at just under £80, the set is a bit cheaper than the £119.99 Edifier R1280DB bookshelf speakers, I reviewed a while back. Being slightly cheaper does mean a few things have been lost, such as an optical connection option and treble adjustment.

If you’re after something that would look good on a bookshelf or next to a PC setup, then I would definitely say the Edifier R1010BT bookshelf speakers are something to consider. With a style similar to speakers included with Hi-Fi systems, they are a million times nicer to look at than your typical portable Bluetooth speakers. You have a choice of two colors when it comes to these speakers, there’s black or brown, of which I’m using the latter, which does look quite nice sitting on my sideboard. I can’t say anything for the black, other than they do look nice in the photos. I am, however, not much of a fan of the faux leather that covers the top of each unit, it’s not a major issue, but the speaker units would look much nicer without it.
Despite such a low price, the build quality is astoundingly good. Each unit is made of a strong and durable 15mm thick MDF, which not only gives them a solid appearance but also prevents excessive vibrations, which have an effect on the overall audio playback. At the front of each unit is a removable cover, that once removed, reveals a setup consisting of a 4-inch woofer and a 13mm dome tweeter. I have found that I like the look of these speakers, both bare without the cover and with the cover.
Turning to the back of the active speaker (the one with all the connections and power lead) reveals a panel that consists of some dials and connection points. The only other connection option next to the Bluetooth is via RCA cables, as there’s no 3.5mm audio jack or optical port. The other connection point is the point at which each of the two units connects to one another via standard speaker cabling. Speaker cabling does come included, but if you want the speakers further apart, you can use any standard speaker cables. The dials present on the back are for bass adjustment and volume adjustment. The volume dial also acts as a mode selection button, which works by being pushed in. The rear of the secondary speaker is home to the active speaker connection point.
There’s an IR port on the front of the active speaker for remote controls, although I can’t find anything to suggest a remote control is normally included in the set. That said the review set I have been sent did come with what appears to be a universal remote, that works quite well. So if you can find a decent universal remote, you’ll be able to control these speakers from afar. It would be better to just include a normal remote in the package, as Edifier do have some pretty good, but basic remotes with some of their other speakers.
Given the price point of the Edifier R1010BT bookshelf speakers, it would be unreasonable to expect audiophile-pleasing quality, but that doesn’t mean that the audio is bad. In fact, at the price point, the audio these speakers produce is far from bad.
With this set, you get clear and crisp results that make for a pleasurable listening experience. The treble while not adjustable offers some decent highs. The bass, which is easy to adjust offers a fair amount of whack that certainly gets the floor trembling.
When at their highest in terms of volume, they continue to provide a smooth listening experience, with barely any distortion at all and any distortion that is present is hardly noticeable as the speakers continue to push out the beats.
Overall, the Edifier R1010BT bookshelf speakers are really good value for the money you pay. They are well-built and look the part with their typical speaker design. Despite a low price point of just less than £80, the audio is pretty good, to say the least, sure it’s not audiophile quality, but for that, you’d have to pay a hell of a lot more anyway.
PROS:
- Solid, well-made set
- Decent audio for the price
- Low price
CONS:
- Remote not included by default
- Faux leather on top looks slightly tacky
