Edifier MP200 Portable Speaker Review

I’ve reviewed many Edifier speakers over the past year, but the Edifier MP200 portable speaker is quite different to what I’m used to reviewing for Edifier, as it’s, as the title says, ”portable’. Having been impressed many times by Edifier’s offering of bookshelf speakers, I was really excited to get my hands on this tiny bag-friendly speaker and experience something different from a company I respect a lot.

Listed below are bestselling Edifier MP200 Portable Speaker which satisfy both affordability and quality.

Features and specifications:

  • Pair two Bluetooth devices simultaneously
  • Bluetooth 4.1
  • USB Streaming audio decoder
  • 2200mAh battery. (Up to 12 hours of playback time)
  • Micro-SD playback
  • IP54 rating for dust and splash proofing
  • 5.5W power output
  • 48mm neodymium speaker driver
  • Bluetooth, micro-SD and USB audio streaming playback options

The MP200 is a 2-inch cube-shaped speaker, complete with a rubber coated housing, making it a speaker that’s ready to take on what the world has to throw at it. Pair an IP54 rating with this durable build quality and you’re ready to use this speaker outdoors thanks to its dust and water-resistant properties.

A smooth outer coating, makes the speaker feel good in the hand and a built-in adjustable lanyard string means it’s also easy to carry from your wrist or hang for a hanging point.

Five buttons are all that is needed to control the Edifier MP200 portable speaker. Three of them are located on the top, while the other two are down the left side. The buttons are very responsive with no stiffness and also offer a click so you know you’ve pressed them properly. On the right side, is a rubber flap to help maintain the IP54 rating. Lifting this flap up takes very little effort and reveals the microUSB port and micro-SD slot.

The front and back of the MP200 are home to a graphite grey speaker grill made of plastic. The grill uses small holes for sound distribution, while the Edifier logo sits in a squared bang on the center of each grill.

Fans of color choices will be happy to know, the MP200 is available in seven colors, which are:

  • Light Green
  • Beige
  • Blue
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Light Blue
  • Black

Powering the Edifier MP200 portable speaker is a rather generous 2200mAh battery that offers up to 12 hours of playback from a single charge. Of course, the amount of time you get from a single charge depends on certain factors such as volume level and mode in use. Listening at a moderate volume, while connected to my phone via Bluetooth has twice gotten me just under 11 hours of use, which is quite good and much better than some other portable Bluetooth speakers I have used. Charging time from completely flat to full takes just under three hours from my PC’s USB port.

With three playback options, it’s easy to enjoy music from various sources. The inclusion of a micro-SD slot is rather good since even these days not many portable speakers have them and the same can be said for the USB playback. I am disappointed to say that the MP200 lacks the most popular and in my opinion most welcome connectivity choice, the 3.5mm audio jack.

Each of the three connectivity options works really well and there’s no noticeable difference in audio playback quality based on the source of input. While I have tested all three sources, my main use of this speaker has been when it’s connected to my phone via Bluetooth.

The sound quality is amazing, especially considering this speaker can be picked up on Amazon in the UK for as little as £19.99. Overall the audio is clear and crisp, although it does lack in some areas such as bass and volume, which does bug me a bit, especially when using the speaker inside as opposed to outside in the open, where the volume is much more appealing.

As I mentioned before, the audio doesn’t really differ across the three sources. Overall quality depends mostly on the type of file being played through the source, as it does any time you’re playing music.

Also present on this speaker is a built-in microphone, so you can take phone calls without having to stop what you’re doing, well that’s the purpose, except, the microphone isn’t any good unless you’re sat right next to the speaker, meaning you may as well just put the phone to your ear and talk normally.

Edifier’s MP200 is a brilliant little speaker from a company who knows quite a lot about good audio. It’s well made and ready to take on the world with its IP54 rating and rubber coated body. A lack of bass and low volume is a disappointment to me, but the overall audio quality is decent, considering its such a cheap speaker.

PROS:

  • Cheap
  • Bag friendly size
  • Three different audio sources
  • IP54 rating
  • Built to take on the world

CONS:

  • Low volume and bass
  • Microphone isn’t very good
