Edifier M1390BT Speaker Review: Design

Being a 2.1 speaker setup, this system comes with 2 satellite speakers accompanied by one subwoofer unit. The satellites are a semi-circle shape from front to back, with the speaker drivers sitting on the flat front edge. On the left speaker, you’ll find the Edifier branding, while the right one is home to a multi-purpose dial that takes care of volume adjustment and input selection. Each of these two speakers has dimensions of 106 x 188 x 163 mm, so as you can imagine they don’t take up too much room, making them perfect for even the busiest of desks.

A black plastic housing is used all around the speakers with the sides to back finished with a glossy shine, while the front panels have a dull shineless finish. The speakers are pretty light and as a result are quite hollow, which you’ll find by simply tapping on them. This does make them feel quite cheap in comparison, to other similarly priced Edifier speakers, I have used.

Each speaker independently connects to the subwoofer with its own built-in cable. The left speaker connects using a standard AV white audio jack, while the right which houses a control dial uses an interface similar to a VGA monitor cable.

The subwoofer is a typical box shape complete with MDF wooden paneling finished in a dull black coloring, at the front you can see the air tunnel, while the driver is hiding underneath. WIth dimensions of 198 x 250 x 224 it’s certainly bigger than the satellite speakers it accompanies and therefore takes up a bit more desk space, however, it’s designed to be sitting at ground level and features legs that lift it up allowing the base mounted driver to happily bounce away while facing your floor. In this instance, however, since space below my desk is limited, I haven’t been using this speaker setup with my PC and instead have opted to have it all set up on a sideboard where I can connect it to other devices using either the cable connection or the Bluetooth option.

Around the rear of the subwoofer, you’ll find the connection panel which features the inputs for the two speakers, a 3.5mm audio out, a red and white audio out panel (L and R), a bass adjustment dial, a power switch and lastly a built-in power cable.

Unfortunately, there’s no remote control included, meaning you’ll have to perform adjustments from the connected device or the dial on the front of the right speaker. This dials turns to adjust volume and can be pressed in to switch between inputs.

Edifier M1390BT Speaker Review: Setup

Getting the M1390BT speaker set up is actually quite easy, even without using the included instructions as everything is pretty much common sense, just from looking at the whole setup. It’s pretty clear from just doing this, where each cable goes on the rear panel of the subwoofer.

As is the case with all Bluetooth devices these days, the initial pairing of the M1390BT with a Bluetooth device is pretty much straight forward. Once paired, the connection is stable within the recommended range.

Edifier M1390BT Speaker Review: Audio quality

Given its low price, I didn’t expect too much in terms of overall audio quality from the M1390BT, but I can happily say that the audio is pretty reasonable for a speaker of this type.

Crisp and clear audio is delivered with no noticeable distortion at high volume levels, while the bass set at the middle of the dial is reasonable enough to deliver a nice bit of bounce from the audio playing.

I have found that the quality seems to be the same across both a wired connection and a Bluetooth connection from my phone. There’s very little, if any at all, difference between the two input options when it comes to quality.

While I’m no audio expert, I do feel that this set delivers pretty good audio for the money, but obviously, it’s not something that would make an audiophile scream from the top of a mountain.

The Edifier M1390BT speaker set is yet another example of how Edifier is able to deliver decent enough speakers no matter what the price. Of course, it’s nowhere near 100% perfect, but it’s still a great set for such a low price. A few small niggles such as a lack of remote control and plastic satellite speakers, do remind you this is a budget speaker set. In terms of audio, what you get is pleasing enough to the average user, who doesn’t deem themselves as an audiophile.
