Welcome to my AMP X7 Portable Stereo Bluetooth Speaker review. As a fan of music, I can never be without it, that’s why I love Bluetooth speakers. I own a few but so far nothing has stunned me quite as much as the X7.
Design and quality:
Out of every single Bluetooth speaker I own, the AMP X7 Portable Stereo Bluetooth Speaker is the biggest and heaviest. This isn’t a bad thing though as the size and weight are part and parcel of the components inside this speaker. There are two 12.5W drivers at front of the speaker with two opposing passive bass subwoofers sitting centrally inside the speaker. Also, present inside the speaker is a 6600mAh rechargeable battery. This not only powers the speaker but can also be used to give a boost to the battery of a connected device such as a phone or tablet, thanks to the built-in power bank.
The speaker has a very modern look to it, with a black body that is mostly covered by a grey grill that runs from the front of the speaker to the back. There’s one part of this that I don’t like and that is the seam where the two ends of the grill meet. The seam is located on the left-hand side of the grill and looks really horrible. It’s a minor cosmetic irritation that the speaker could really do without. Proudly sitting centrally at the top of the grill is the AMP branding.
Along the top of the speaker are several buttons, LED status lights for the Bluetooth mode and battery level status, a microphone and lastly a thermal sensor that activates the backlights under the buttons. Also present is an engraved NFC badge, which is used to tell the user where to place their phone if using NFC for pairing.
Around the back of the speaker is a panel that is home to an aux in port, an aux out port, a 15v in charging port, a USB port for charging devices using the built-in power bank and a reset button for restoring the speaker to factory settings.
At the bottom of the speaker are a set of large rubber feet for keeping the speaker from moving off the surface it’s on as it plays music. These do a fantastic job of keeping the speaker in one area, no matter how loud I have it. Also present down here are two metal circles, that are there for the charging cradle (not included).
The built-in battery has a capacity of 6600mAh that gives it up to 10 hours of playback time dependent on certain factors such as volume level or the connectivity mode in use. Since the speaker arrived, I have used it quite a lot and charged it about 6 times now. I get varied results between 7 to 10 hours depending on the above factors. I do think 10 hours isn’t a lot as I have used other speakers in this price bracket that are able to last up to 20 hours.
I am impressed with the build quality of this speaker. It’s well made and feels extremely solid in the hand. The weight of it gives me confidence that everything inside is securely mounted, well that and the fact that when I lift it to give it a test shake in my hands no unexpected sounds are heard.
Setup and signal strength:
As is normal with many different Bluetooth devices I have used, pairing this with my phone for the first time was a quick and easy task that took me under 30 seconds to do. If you have never done this before or aren’t very tech savvy, you’ll be pleased to know the included manual shows clearly how to do it.
The recommended usage range of the AMP X7 Portable Stereo Bluetooth Speaker is 20 meters which means you can use the speaker and the connected device within 20 meters of each other without having dropouts. I have been able to use this speaker with my phone in the kitchen and the speaker in the front room with no issues at all. I have even been able to use on the second level of my house, although it was at it’s best right at the top of the stairs.
If Bluetooth isn’t your thing or you are rocking an old MP3 player, you’ll be happy to know this comes with an aux cable as well as an aux in port to directly connect your device. The only real downside is that you won’t be able to carry your device about with you as it will be connected to the speaker via a cable.
Audio and microphone quality:
The audio produced by the AMP X7 Portable Stereo Bluetooth Speaker is fantastic and I expected nothing less, to be honest. The speaker handles all the different genres I have thrown at it with ease. The audio is clear and crisp, while the bass is set at a great level. The combination of two 12.5W drivers and the opposing passive bass subwoofers has created a truly immersive experience that I haven’t experienced in any of my other Bluetooth speakers.
Using the built-in microphone yields fantastic results each time. I have used it for both Skype and normal phone calls and have yet to be disappointed by it at all. My voice is clearly picked up and delivered to whoever is on the other side of the phone with no issues at all.
Overall:
I am very impressed with the AMP X7 Portable Stereo Bluetooth Speaker. It’s a well-made speaker with decent audio quality. It does have a few things I don’t like which are the battery, which could be better and the seam where the edges of the speaker meet on the left-hand side.
